Our Story: 80 years of Quality and Service

  • In 1917 William (Will) Nash, aged 13, left the family farm near Leighton Buzzard and was apprenticed to the small bakery business of Edward E. Page of Aylesbury as a Baker and Confectioner.
  • In 1923 he moved from Page’s Bakery to a variety of other bakeries around the country from which he gained valuable experience and different skills.  It was at one of these bakeries in Newbury that his life-long love of horse racing begins.  It was also in Newbury that Will met his future wife of 57 years, Winifred Billing.
  • In 1926 he moved to Oxford and with a friend started a small business called the Grandpont Bakery selling his soon-to-be famous Oxford Lardy Cakes from a stall at the city’s market.
  • In 1929 he moved his wife and the first of their 9 children to Bicester where he bought a shop and founded Nash’s Bakery.
  • Will started exhibiting and winning wards for his products all over the country at trade and county shows as far apart as Bournemouth and Blackpool.
  • During the 1930’s he started delivery rounds from his bakery to the villages around Bicester.
  • At the outbreak of war in 1939 deliveries start to the large British army base located just outside Bicester in the villages of Ambrosden and Arncott.  He also made daily deliveries to the huge American Air Force base located in Upper Heyford.
  • After the war Will bought out and then ran Mrs. Browing’s Café on Bicester’s Market Square as well as running a mobile café in a converted van on Bicester’s London Road.
  • In 1949 having outgrown their original bakery premises, Will bought out George Cannon’s bakery business in Bicester, renaming it W.G. Nash and Sons and moved the baking side of the business into Cannon’s much larger bakery building in Priory Road with elder sons Clifford and Lawrence.
  • In 1951 Bill is crowned National Hovis Bread Champion for producing the best loaf of bread in the country!
  • In 1955 Will opened his second shop in Oxford’s famous Covered Market.
  • In 1963 Will opened a second shop in Oxford called the Swiss Patisserie and in 1966 Will’s son Graham joins the business and they are joined in 1969 by a second son, Trevor.
  • In 1971 Will officially retires and hands over control to his two sons Trevor and Graham.  Bill and Winn finally have time for their first foreign holiday- Romania here we come!
  • 1986 is a busy year!  Graham and Trevor repeat their father’s feat of becoming The National Hovis Bread Champions in the final ever year of the competition and they still find time to build and move into a brand new 6000 square foot bakery building off Priory Lane in Bicester.
  • In 1990 a second shop is opened in Bicester when the brothers buy the Bicester Bakery business from the Richards family bringing the number of shops to four.
  • In 1992 Graham’s son Mark joined the firm as a part-time delivery driver. He says it’s only a temporary appointment but nearly 18 years later he’s still here.
  • In 1998 Graham is appointed President of the National Association of Master Bakers – it’s most prestigious appointment – We’ll see you in a year Dad!
  • In 1995 a 5th shop with a Coffee House is opened in Chipping Norton.
  • In 2003 Trevor retired to the golf course – watch out Chesterton!
  • In 2004 a new shop on Bicester’s Bucknell Road is opened, the firms 6th.
  • In December 2007 Will Nash passes at the age of 103.  He still helped out in the bakery well into his nineties.  A wonderful man and a wonderful baker!
  • 2009 and still going strong ….
